A directory service is a method of hierarchically representing objects within a network operating system. Active Directory is developed and supported by Microsoft. It is presently a tool for integrating other services in the Windows Server operating system. Network administrators can use Active Directory to distribute group policies, thus providing a common configuration environment for multiple users. It is also used to centrally install and update software on network computers.
